I know that canceling an open card can adversely affect credit. but I canceled the actual application process, minutes after I applied.
I had hoped to get instant approval to get a big discount on an airline ticket, but as a student and my little income they would have had to do a full background credit check (which would have gotten me the card), but I didn't have time to wait to buy the ticket, so I wanted to cancel.
Since you didn't get the instant approval, my guess is, you submitted the application, and they did the hard pull on your credit already. So, you have an inquiry which is less than 10 points on your score.
Cancelling the application at this point probably won't erase the inquiry that has already occurred.
Does canceling a credit card application before it is approved or denied going to affect my credit?

First of all, credit card companies send out random invitations all the time. More cards usually means more business for them. Also, anything that says "pre-approved" usually has fine print that says "after a credit check", so the invitation is really meaningless. If you want to open a card, do some research first and find one with a good rewards program and no regular fee.
