Can I file a cc letter with the court days later?

I wrote a letter to the opposing counsel and COMPLETELY forgot about the courtesy copy for the court. Is it even imperative to cc the court or is it just that a "courtesy" copy in regards to my communication with the opposing counsel? I sent the letter last week, should I just go ahead and file it with the court? (does there have to be a cover letter or special annotation denoting that it was sent days prior?)
