Wouldn't it be wonderful if it were that easy? For the majority of us, once we have made the decision to find a new card that suits our needs, we want the application process to happen as quickly as possible... And there is no shortage of websites offering instant credit card approval, but is it really instant? I don't think so! So I decided to put the question to the test, and discover just how long it takes from telling yourself "I want a credit card", to actually receiving the card and being in a position to use it.
I began by obtaining a copy of my credit report, which I knew I would need in order to find out exactly which cards I would qualify for. That took two days although I did go down the 'free credit report' route and maybe if I had paid I would have received it sooner. I did not have perfect credit but was in good shape and my score was above average, so I was confident I would have a reasonable choice of cards available to me. That evening I spent time on my laptop perusing the plethora of instant card portals and in particular, those that offered the opportunity to make comparisons of cards from different issuers. I was now 3 days from my 'I want a credit card' moment and felt that I was now ready to make my online application.
I actually submitted my application on a website offering instant card approval, at approximately 10.30pm, on a Thursday evening and checked my email account the following lunchtime. the only mail from the card company was an automated reply confirming that they had received my application. I heard nothing from the issuing company until the following Monday by which time I was 7 days from first telling myself, "I want a credit card". An associate from the company called me on my cell it seems to verify a couple of answers to questions on my application form. having clarified those points I was informed that I would have a decision from them, by email, 'within 24 hours'.
It was 38 hours later that I received the email response I was hoping for, confirming that my application had been successful and that I would have my new card 'within a matter of days'. it was ten days later that my new card was delivered (7 business days), and my calculations showed that from deciding I want a credit card to holding the new card in my hand was 19 days.. Not bad for an instant credit card application! Not! Baring in mind that my application went smoothly with no delays for further checks into my credit history to be made, I am now of the opinion that there is no such thing as an instant credit card. You might be wise to consider my experience the next time you tell yourself "I want a credit card and I want it instantly"!

To me, that just seems scammy. As in "click here for your free credit report... oh! We've found problems. Pay to see what they are!"

It's absurd that this actually works, but it is something that all parents should likely be aware of. If you take advantage of the gov-mandated free credit report thing, you'll see that it influences metrics such as "oldest account age" (as in, the kids' oldest account age ends up being that of their parents' card) as well as total line of credit. It's a nice boost if you want to help your kid get a car loan or other similar thing after college without having to co-sign or such things.
