I rent items and want to be able to put a "security hold" on their credit card like a hotel does in case they break the items. It would be nice to also have the same service be able to accept credit card payments to be able to charge their rentals.

The hardest part of running a business, especially a small business, is being compliant with all the applicable laws (that and managing cash flow). Sounds like the kid got an apt lesson, the Dad too. Maybe the kid will grow up and start a small business that doesn't fail immediately unlike 90% of them.
How can I possibly believe that a physical book that requires shipping, materials and more physical hours to create can cost the same as an e book. Yes, I will grant the author needs a cut, the publisher staff, the seller they all have to cover their costs. But, don't just quote credit card merchant costs on the e book, we use credit cards and the seller has those same costs with a physical book.
