My credit card processing company unilaterally charged me a higher discount rate than we agreed. My first monthly bill reflected this. any idea why such a legitimate business company would do this?
I don't know about the details but have you tried asking them?
From your post, your discount rate could have been downgraded to a higher fee. This is due to several reasons, but among them are: you manually entered credit card information instead of swiping it, you processed a different type of card, or you don't batch your credit card transactions after 24 hours.

If you're not comfortable with having a real one click payment method in your account, you can get one of those prepaid Visa cards, use most of the balance on it, then add it to your Amazon account. I do this all the time for services which require credit card information but I have no intention of ever spending money on.

But I agree with Seriously?. If one is stopped for a traffic stop or similar legitimate business, they need to show their face. That is why there is a photo on the driver’s license. Otherwise, it’s off to the station to be identified at leisure, and off to impound with their car.
For promotions like this, I generate a virtual account number with my Citibank Credit card. I can get a credit card number which only has a $1 limit. Merchants cannot tell the difference. When it comes time to renew, I get pleading emails to update my credit card information, but they cannot get any money out of me!
